There are two types of managers: the ones that are actually managers and others that are not! But both have one goal: to manage! The manager that manages the manager, that manages another manager, and the last manager that manages the only employee.
Why do we have managers?
In an ideal world: to motivate, to have a shoulder for you when you want to shout, to offer you a boxing bag when needed and a cup of coffee when you lost your motivation
In the real world: to take care that your agenda is filled with appointments to update him on your work, to complain that everything you order is very expensive; to make sure you declare your working hours at the end of the week, to complain you declare too many hours per week and to make us forget who we actually are... scientists.
